Myopia (Nearsightedness) Control Methods Review:
The aim of myopia control is to retard or even sthe progression of shortsightedness (i.e. myopia). The information below is a general review of the latest concept of optical intervention for myopia control. You may call us (Tel: 21530008) for detail information.
The Normal Eye
Ideally, image should be focused on and along the retina of the eyeball to ensure clear central and peripheral vision. There should be no image being focused behind the retina, otherwise, eyeball elongation and nearsightedness progress will be simulated. In general, the higher the myopia, the longer the eyeball. In turn, the retina will be scratched thin and ultimately be damaged. High myopia will increase the chance of eye diseases, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataract.....
Ordinary Myopic Eyeglasses
For myopia (nearsightedness ), to correct vision, we have to use minus prescription lens to re-locate the central focus back onto the retina.
Unfortunately, traditional ophthalmic lenses are built according to the prototype of camera lenses, which generating a flat focal plan. The peripheral image will be focused behind the retina while the central focus located precisely on the central retina. Accordingly, the peripheral retina will elongate to catch-up the position of the peripheral image. That will generate the tendency for myopia increase.
In order to control the myopia progression, optometrists and researchers worldwide spent a lot of effort to develop effective ways to help the myopic children. There are three "defocus" prototypes available nowadays, such as Orthokeratology, Defocus incorporated soft contact lens and Peripheral defocus eyeglasses. Our optometrist may choose the method best suits the life style of the children or teenagers accordingly.
Generally, the strength and effect of nearsightedness risk control methods follows the following sequence:
Orthokeratology 88% > Peripheral defocus eyeglasses 59% > Defocus incorporated soft contact lens 50%
(Data from same institue: HK PolyU. 研究數據由同一機構公布:香港理工大學)** difference studies used different statistic models, thus, the effectiveness of different studies cannot be directly compared. For detail, please consult our optometrists. ** 因每個研究採用不同的統計方法,各研究的功效不能直接比較。詳情請向我們的眼科視光師查詢!
Importance of eye length: longer eye length, higher blindness risk!
Orthokeratology is a proven effective method for nearsightedness control. It is one of the golden standard for comparison of other myopic control methods. By use of special design rigid gas permeable contact lenses at nighttime, Optometrist may modify the shape of cornea to achieve good quality vision without glasses and contact lenses at daytime. Orthokeratology can alter the peripheral image focus, while keeping the central vision clear. The purposely generated peripheral defocus resulted by orthokeratology can guide the growth of eyeball and control myopia progression. Concentric defocus incorporated soft contact lenses are the new options for myopia control other than orthokeratology. They are different from the ordinary soft contact lenses. They have additional set of refractive power to control the nearsightedness progression. The additional power will generate an additional focal plan in front of the retina and naturalizing the tendency for the eyeball elongation.

Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) glasses
Peripheral Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) Spectacle Lens MyoSmart is one of options for myopia control. It is different from ordinary spectacle lenses. The prescription at the peripheral area of the lens is altered by the multiple plus power dots (micro lens segments) to limit and prevent the extend of peripheral focal plan focused at the back of the retina. DIMS technology can effectively limit or retard the myopic progression of children.
Reminder: effectiveness of all myopia control lenses will be affected significantly by the design of glasses frames and the position of wear. Accordingly, we have glasses frames specifically fit the requirement of myopia control lenses. We also have equipment, tools and guideline for fitting of different myopia control lenses, such as DIMS MyoSmart, MyoVision and Myopilux Max.
